This is a subset of a larger topic that has been running in my mind lately.

If you are a software engineer and haven’t heard about death of software engineering by A.I then I envy you!

With advent of A.I, as a professional Software Engineer it is really hard to enjoy programming or developing software. I mean the act of thinking about the logic, typing the syntax, running and getting the kick when things work without any errors the first time around or looking at the error stack wearing the detective’s hat to fix the issue. Either ways there was dopamine at the end of it. I miss it!

In an ideal world, AI should accelerate and eliminate the mundane tasks of software engineering 1 . In theory, giving more time back and improving the quality of life for software engineers but reality is far from it.

The time saved typing out code or thinking of logic should be spent analyzing and understanding the LLM-produced code. As I speak to more engineers this doesn’t seem to be happening because AI should triple/quadruple the number of features being shipped, tickets being closed. And with that kind of expectations, it is hard to review the LLM generated code.

  1. I could argue that there is some joy to it as well.↩︎
