… I am still not using it

It has been over 1.5 years since AI (Apple Intelligence) got released, and I still haven’t enabled it. Thank you Apple for giving me the option to opt-out and not forcing it on me.

Setting aside the fact that it still hasn’t delivered on the “promise AI Siri” Apple touted in their 2024 WWDC presentation, Apple recently announced it entered a deal with Google to leverage Gemini to make Siri smarter. Could this be the transformation of Siri from a dumb assistant to a genuinely AI-powered one?

It would be interesting to see how much of Gemini’s power Google will actually lend to Siri. After all most of their marketing campaign and ads I have seen has been taking a jab at Siri for lack of true AI and up playing Gemini’s greatness.

For better or worse I am satisfied with the current Siri, even though it’s essentially just a voice-activated shortcut. It works great for my usecases.

Hey Siri!

  • What is the weather today?
  • Will it rain in the next hour?
  • Set timer for x hours
  • Set alarm
  • Increase volume
  • Pause
  • Start/end workout.

Yep! that is pretty much all my Siri interactions. It’s possible that I’ve trained my subconscious to avoid asking Siri for anything complicated or that I know it won’t be able to handle—so I avoid the frustration of Siri not getting the request right. This has played out well for me so far.

Addendum

As I composed this post, I realized that it would be unfair to pass judgment that AI(Apple Intelligence) is still not upto the mark without giving it another try- especially since the last time I tested it was right after the launch.

That said, a year later, not much has changed to shift my opinion or convince me to enable it.
